The important role Registrant Council Members play in helping shape how the professions are regulated
With applications open for GDC registrants to apply for the role of Registrant Council Member, Serbjit Kaur reflects on what inspired her to join the GDC Council.
Who we are and what we do
We regulate over 130,000 dental professionals across the UK. We exist to protect the public and maintain public confidence in the dental professions, a role given to us by Parliament and set out in the Dentists Act.
Why I became a Council Member
As a dentist with senior leadership experience at NHS England and the Department of Health and Social Care, I was drawn to the opportunity to help shape how the dental professions are regulated.
What impressed me most during the recruitment process was the GDC's balanced approach. This is a fair and conscientious regulator, focused on the impact of regulation on the professions and on public protection. That commitment to fairness runs through everything the organisation does.
The GDC focuses on value for money and its responsibility to use registrant fees wisely. I've been particularly impressed by the investment in research to ensure our regulatory approach is evidence-based.
The GDC genuinely acknowledges that fitness to practise can be stressful and is committed to making it quicker, more efficient and fairer. The results speak for themselves; fewer people are now going through fitness to practise processes, which shows that prevention is working.
Why I enjoy being a Council Member
My time as a Council Member has been a rewarding and enriching journey. I have learned a great deal about regulation and met some amazing people. I’ve been genuinely impressed by the exceptional professionalism of the executive and staff. The teamwork across the organisation is outstanding.
All Council Members can freely express their opinions, and there is a supportive relationship between the executive and non-executives. The GDC has also been instrumental in bringing stakeholders together to facilitate open and frank discussions, which makes the role all the more rewarding.
This is an exciting time to join the GDC. With our Chief Executive and new Chair bringing fresh perspectives, we're moving forward with ambition and purpose. Our new 2026-2028 strategy demonstrates our commitment to being a trusted and effective regulator, supporting dental professionals to provide safe and effective care.
We champion a model of regulation that supports professionalism, enables learning, and resolves issues quickly and proportionately.
The strategy focuses on five objectives: supporting professionals to provide excellent care, maintaining high registration standards, improving fitness to practise, working collaboratively, and maximising our effectiveness as an organisation.
What it involves
Being a Council Member requires a commitment of around 20 to 25 days per year. This includes preparing for and attending Council meetings, serving on one of our committees, and participating in other GDC activities.
The work is varied and interesting. You will help shape strategic direction, oversee performance, engage with stakeholders, and hold the executive to account, all while contributing to real change in how dental regulation works.
If you're passionate about shaping the future of dental regulation, I'd strongly encourage you to apply. It's a rewarding role in which you can make a meaningful difference.
How to apply
Applications close at midday on Friday, 6 February 2026. We welcome applications from registered dental professionals across all four UK nations.
